What is 7-Zip?

7-Zip is a free, open-source file archiver created by Igor Pavlov. It opens almost any archive you're likely to download, including ZIP, RAR, 7z, TAR and ISO files, and can create ZIP, 7z and other formats.

Its own 7z format often produces smaller files than ZIP, and 7z and ZIP archives can be protected with AES-256 encryption. On Windows it adds commands to the right-click menu. Official command-line versions are also available for Linux and macOS.
