Editorial policy
How Aptorise chooses the software it lists and recommends, and what our labels mean.
What Aptorise is
Aptorise is a software discovery and recommendation site. We describe software, compare options and link you to where you can get it. We do not host or distribute installers: every download link goes to the developer's official website or an official app store.
What Editor's Choice means Editor's Choice
Editor's Choice marks a small, curated set of software that our editors consider a particularly strong choice in its category. It is deliberately selective: most software listed on Aptorise does not have it, and being popular or well known is not enough on its own.
When deciding, editors consider:
- Usefulness: It does its job well for the people it's aimed at, and solves a real need.
- Reliability: It has a track record of working dependably, without frequent serious problems.
- Value: It's free, or its price is fair for what it offers compared with alternatives.
- Ease of use: Someone in its intended audience can get started without a struggle.
- Platform support: It's available on the platforms its users need, and kept up to date on them.
- Privacy and security: Where relevant, it handles data responsibly and has a good security record.
- Longevity and developer support: It's actively maintained, by a developer or community with a history of supporting it.
- Quality compared with alternatives: It stands out against the other options in its category, not just on its own.
Editor's Choice is an editorial judgement based on these factors and on published information about the software. It is not the result of formal laboratory testing, and we don't describe software as independently tested unless we have tested it ourselves. Picks are reviewed over time and can be removed if software falls behind its alternatives, stops being maintained or changes in ways that affect users.
Developers cannot pay for Editor's Choice or for their position in our lists.
Other labels
- Free, Freemium, Paid and Open Source describe how the software is licensed and priced, based on the developer's own information. Prices change, so always check the official website.
- Popular Software highlights well-known, widely used software that's worth exploring. It is an editorial selection, not a ranking based on download figures.
- Last verified is the date an editor last checked a listing's official links and key details.
Official sources and install commands
We link only to official developer websites and official app stores, and we never show adverts designed to look like download buttons.
Install commands in Build My Setup (Winget, Homebrew, APT and Flatpak) are only generated from package IDs that have been checked against the official package registry. Those package IDs are re-checked regularly, and a command is withdrawn if its package can no longer be found.
Ratings, reviews and download numbers
We don't publish star ratings, review scores or download counts unless they come from a genuine source that we name. We don't invent screenshots, logos or statistics.
Corrections
Software changes quickly. If you spot something out of date or incorrect, such as a price, a platform or a broken link, please let us know and we'll review it.
Commercial independence
Affiliate relationships never decide which software is included, how it's ranked or whether it's recommended. A free or open-source tool is listed above a commercial one whenever it's the better fit. Where a link is an affiliate link, it's labelled; see our affiliate disclosure.
